LIERMAN NEIGHBORHOOD ACTION COMMITTEE

COMMUNITY GARDEN

URBANA ILLINOIS

The Lierman Neighborhood Action Committee (LNAC) was established as a response to an outbreak of violence in an undeserved and economically challenged community in Urbana Illinois and positions the community members as clients with true decision making power over their community. LNAC decided that a community garden would be paramount to bringing real and lasting change to the community. The garden needed to be built within a very tight budget, be accessible and was specifically designed with a construction process that can accommodate many volunteers who have a wide range of ability with the goal of engaging all 150 households in the service area. This project involved one of the fastest turnarounds in the history of the City of Urbana taking less than 10 months from concept to completion.
