GRAND ROOKERY HOTEL
CHICAGO
The Grand Rookery Hotel is intended to be a multi fictional and unique addition to the city intended for a then vacant lot a block east of Michigan Avenue and two blocks north of Grant Park. The classical base shaft and cap design of early Chicago high rises is given a new twist with dramatic cantilevers and strategic plantings and use of materials that bring elements of nature into sharp contrast with the rigid orthogonal nature of the surrounding buildings. The base has commercial and amenity spaces, the shaft is comprised of hotel residences and office space and the top is a museum and event space with a dynamic sculptural roof line. For the hotel the double loaded corridors are given a serpentine layout to allow or more privacy and the rooms are simple and streamlined in design.
